Did the title frighten you?
Yesterday I taught my class Long Division. Today I have Covid. Coincidence?
LOL but actually, we had a really good time with it. I started by sharing the first two examples in the video by Mr. J where he uses the Box Method to solve long division. Then I went through a few examples with my Sprouts (They are Ms. Russell's Sprouts, of course) and then they were ready to tackle it on there own! I guess I will find out tomorrow how successful we were!
One of the things that I did with the kiddos that helped them buy in, was taking the time to come up with a mnemonic device to help them remember the order of steps for a long division problem(Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring up, Repeat). Mnemonic devices have a 0.76 Effect Size according to John Hattie's research, so I was pretty confident it would aid the Sprouts in their Long Division endeavours!
Some of the ones we came up with were:
Drac Made Sus Bacon Rhymes
Daniel Missed School Because of Rage
Dogs Must Stand Behind Rabbits
David Made Some Bad Risotto
and some other equally ridiculous ones! One of my students had previously learned "Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother, Rover" which is a common one that I tend to avoid because it doesn't really help us remember the ORDER of the steps (who is to say that Dad comes before Mom, after all?)
With great fortitude,
-M💗
