Math is Everywhere, Even in Outer Space!

In addition to teaching math (the best subject ever), I also teach science (also pretty nifty). Last week we started our Sky Science unit, which is my favourite science unit to teach! One of my favourite lessons to teach is the one about the solar system, and how biiiiiiiiiiig it is!
I always show my students this website called "If the Moon Were One Pixel" by Josh Worth. The site breaks down the relative size of space if Earth's moon were only the size of a pixel on a screen.
"a tediously accurate scale model of the solar system"
In the screenshot, you can see the relative distance between Earth and the Moon, as well as their relative size. At the bottom, you can see the scroll bar, which also shows the relative distance of the Earth, from the Sun, compared to the other 7 planets (and Pluto, because Pluto still matters!)
There is also a spot at the bottom which shows the distance from the Sun to Earth. My students had a really great discussion about place value as we checked out the different distances of the planets from the sun!
In this screenshot you can see the distance from the Sun in light minutes (it takes about 8 minutes for the light from the sun to reach us on Earth). We used this website to talk about different units of measurement!
Anyway, math is everywhere! Next time - ART!
With great fortitude,
-M💗
